All homes make noises – creeks, hums, and pops. Add the white noise of everyday households – the clang of clothes in the dryer or the whistle of water in the pipes from the shower, and you quickly become immune to your surroundings. So when you hear an occasional bang of the furnace, it doesn’t trouble you.
However, there remain some HVAC-related sounds you shouldn’t ignore. While you could put these sounds out of your mind, it could cost you in the long run. A small problem can evolve to a bigger and more expensive issue over time.
When you hear rumbling or rattling coming from your air ducts, the first thing to do is check for vent debris, especially in ones on the floor. Things like small toys, coins, or screws can easily fall into the vent and jostle when your system turns on.
If you can remove the vent yourself, simply pull out any misplaced debris inside of it. You never know what you might find! Here are some items pulled out from the floor vent at a recent home inspection. If you still hear noise after clearing things out it’s probably time to call a professional like Commonwealth Home Services for further investigation.
