The Center for Disease Control (CDC) calls carbon monoxide (CO) the invisible killer. Death from CO peaks during the winter months. Why? Because we use more carbon monoxide producing household items including: gas and oil furnaces, portable generators, burning charcoal, propane stoves, and cars, but minimize natural air flow.
During the winter, especially when there is snow on the ground, we huddle inside to stay toasty warm. We hike up the heat and start our cars while they are still in the garage. Dryer vents, stove exhausts, and chimney’s get blocked by piles of snow. Our windows are shut and doors are locked.
Carbon Monoxide is colorless, odorless and tasteless. CO can’t be seen, it can’t be smelled, and it can’t be tasted, but it can KILL.
Approximately 50,000 people a year go to the emergency room due to CO poisoning. The CDC recommends these tips to protect yourself from this invisible killer.
Contact Commonwealth Home Services if you have questions about carbon monoxide, or want a professional to inspect your home’s systems to ensure they are in proper working order.
